The catastrophic extinction of North American mammoths and mastodonts
نویسنده
چکیده
Archaeological and theoretical evidence reviewed here indicates that Clovis-era foragers exterminated mammoths and mastodonts in North America around 11,000 radiocarbon years ago. The process unfolded quickly as human foragers explored and dispersed into fragmenting habitats where megamammal populations were ecologically stressed. Megamammal extinctions were eco-catastrophes with major ripple effects on oral and faunal communities.

Isotopic paleoecology of Clovis mammoths from Arizona.
The causes of megafaunal extinctions in North America have been widely debated but remain poorly understood. Mammoths (Mammuthus spp.) in the American Southwest were hunted by Clovis people during a period of rapid climate change, just before the regional onset of Younger Dryas cooling and mammoth extirpation. Thus, these mammoths may provide key insights into late Pleistocene extinction proces...
متن کاملPattern of extinction of the woolly mammoth in Beringia
Extinction of the woolly mammoth in Beringia has long been subject to research and speculation. Here we use a new geo-referenced database of radiocarbon-dated evidence to show that mammoths were abundant in the open-habitat of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (∼45-30 ka). During the Last Glacial Maximum (∼25-20 ka), northern populations declined while those in interior Siberia increased. Northern mammoth...
متن کاملExtraordinary incidence of cervical ribs indicates vulnerable condition in Late Pleistocene mammoths
The number of cervical vertebrae in mammals is highly conserved at seven. We have shown that changes of this number are selected against due to a coupling with major congenital abnormalities (pleiotropic effects). Here we show that the incidence of abnormal cervical vertebral numbers in Late Pleistocene mammoths from the North Sea is high (33.3%) and approximately 10 times higher than that of e...
متن کاملA"Quasi-Rapid"Extinction Population Dynamics and Mammoths Overkill
In this work we suggest and consider an original, simple mathematical model of a ”quasirapid” extinction population dynamics. It describes a decrease and final extinction of the population of one prey species by a ”quasi-rapid” interaction with one predator species with increasing population. This ”quasi-rapid” interaction means ecologically that prey species behaves practically quite passively...
متن کاملClimate Change, Humans, and the Extinction of the Woolly Mammoth
Woolly mammoths inhabited Eurasia and North America from late Middle Pleistocene (300 ky BP [300,000 years before present]), surviving through different climatic cycles until they vanished in the Holocene (3.6 ky BP). The debate about why the Late Quaternary extinctions occurred has centred upon environmental and human-induced effects, or a combination of both. However, testing these two hypoth...
